Lehrfahrt nach Malta

Klasse 3B/NF - Schuljahr 2008/2009

THE MALTA EXPERIENCE

From 18th to 25th April, the 3rd class B nf attended an English language course in Malta. It was a very positive, sometimes extraordinary experience for all of us, students and teachers. We really enjoyed our stay on the island, the “Heart of the Mediterranean” as the tourist site recites. I have tried to collect some of the students’ impressions…This is my patchwork:
The trip to Malta was really great… wonderful… funny… terrific. I cannot describe it with words. The flight was somehow frightening and turbulent, but most of us enjoyed this little “adventure”. Some of us were flying for the first time. We were all quite excited when we first heard the names of our host families (some of them sounded really strange, similar to Arabic!). So, when we met them the first time, we were examining them. Their cars already told us stories about them. Our family (I mean the first one) was really horrible, they were very fat, dirty and unfriendly. But after the first impact, we got to know that most of them were really fine people, and some of them cooked very well. Unfortunately, not all of them…and fortunately, there was always a McDonald’s next door to help me forget the disgusting toasts and we were lucky because we had our Nutella with us. As for the school we liked it just for the interesting lessons we had. We spoke and read a lot without writing too much. Our teachers were friendly, and we even had a very good guide called Joe. He was really nice and we learned a lot about Malta, its history and its culture. Well, to tell you the truth, I sometimes asked myself how history could survive over there…everything seemed so lost. As you know, Malta means sea and cities, discos and dancing, history and culture. As for the sea (and the sun) we would suggest not to go to Malta without your umbrella. Namely, we had three days of pouring rain (even our hair had a very bad week for this reason) and we could go to the beach only on the last day, when we went swimming at the Blue Lagoon, an incredible place with unbelievable colours: not only was the water blue and green, but even the “dreadful” jellyfish astonished us. We were impressed by the natural landscape we explored in Malta. We had some problems with the bus system. Sometimes we spent more than one hour at the bus stop, waiting for a bus that in reality was not coming. It was very annoying! But, you know, buses in Malta are considered an adventure on its own. Bus drivers are old and angry, or young and very angry! For sure, they are not good at maths. Whenever we paid for the ride, we never got the right exchange back. Bus drivers see themselves as the “Kings of the Road” – one day, you won’t believe it!, we asked a bus driver if he was going to Paceville. He simply answered: “Maybe!”. And you know what?, we landed at the airport! How lucky we were about nightlife in Malta! Paceville never sleeps. Oh, well, Paceville is the place where all Maltese teenagers and foreign students meet at night. It is full of discos, pubs, bars, cinemas, etc. At the karaoke we all sang pretty terribly, but it did not matter. We had so much fun! One day we went bowling for the first time in our life and we discovered we are not so talented for it. We really need some more practice! As for dancing, we had no problems, even if we always needed our English. We were not able to understand the Maltese language (it is the only European Semitic language with European alphabet), so if we wanted to meet people we absolutely needed to improve our English and find the courage to speak. As for the girls, Malta was full of hot guys and we even made a list of the hottest ones! But Malta, for being a small point on Earth, was absolutely unforgettable!
