Teaching culture and/or intercultural competence – principles and applications

What we mean by ‘culture’ is notoriously difficult to define and whether there are ‘national cultures’ which language teachers can teach is highly contentious.

In the first part I will suggest that the difficulties can be met by focusing on intercultural competence (IC) and its components and planning teaching which develops these competences.

In the second part I will describe some basic principles of teaching IC: comparison, shift of perspective (`seeing ourselves as others see us’) and ‘making the strange familiar and the familiar strange’. These will be exemplified briefly for different age-groups of learners with some specific suggestions for classrooms.

Finally I will attempt to link all of this to the more systematic planning found in curriculum documents and consider how what I have said might be relevant to Südtirol.
