The "middle
school" (pupils aged 11 13)
of S. Cristina

The so-called "middle-school"
of Santa Cristina has been introduced in the year 1973. Although
the nearby villages already had their own schools, because of
the large number of students, it was impossible to admit any more
students. Thanks to the commitment and the efforts of the mayor
of that time, Ms Joachina Mussner, whose great interest was dedicated
to children's and youth's education, this basic educational institution
could be created. Since then, about 600 students have been attending
this school, 563 of these managed to pass the final examination.
The schedule of the middle-school covers 36 hours of lessons a
week. Beside Ladin, the mother tongue, which is taught for 2 hours
a week, lessons are held also in German, Italian and English (2
hours weekly). The main feature of the Ladin schools is given
by the "parithetic" instruction: this means that half
of the lessons are held in Italian and the other half in German.
A particular attention is set on the studying and speaking languages.
This multilingual instruction model has certainly proved its worth
in the last 50 years, students leaving Ladin schools are able
to attend, without any major difficulties, German as well as Italian
schools.
